Timeline of Girl Scout History

• October 31, 1860 - Birth of Juliette Gordon Low in Savannah
  
• 1910 - Girl Guide movement begins in England
  
• 1911 - Juliette Low meets Sir Robert Baden-Powell, founder of the Boy Scouts in England and Agnes Baden Powell, founder of Girl Guide in England
  
• March 12, 1912 - Margarat Daisy Gordon (niece of Low) becomes the first registered Girl Guide in America
  
• 1913 - Girl Guides of America renamed to Girl Scouts, national headquarters established in Washington, D.C.
  
• 1915 - Girl Scout organization is incorporated
  
• 1915 - Juliette Gordon Low elected President of Girl Scouts
  
• 1916 - Girl Scout headquarters relocated to New York
  
• 1916 - First Brownie troop organized in Massachusets
  
• 1917 - First Lady Wilson becomes first honorary President of the Girl Scouts
  
• 1917 - First troop for handicapped girls organized in New York
  
• 1920 - Girl Scouts achieve 100 groups (councils) in 11 states and Hawaii. Membership reaches 70,000 girls
  
• 1920 - Juliette Gordon Low retires as President of the Girl Scouts and assumes the title, "Founder fo Girl Scouts"
  
• 1927 - Juliette Gordon Low dies. The Juliette Low World Friendship Fund is established in her honor
  
• 1929 - Membership reaches 200,000 Girl Scouts
  
• 1936 - Over 1 million boxes of cookies sold
  
• 1939 - Over 2 million boxes of cookies sold
  
• 1944 - Membership reaches 1 million
  
• 1947 - Name officially changed to "Girl Scouts of the United States of America"
  
• 1949 - Membership reaches 1.5 million
  
• 1953 - Girl Scouts of America purches the birthplace of Juliette Gordon Low in Savannah. Today, the home is a popular tourist attraction.
  
• 1957 - Membership reaches 3 million
  
• 1962 - 50th anniversary of Girl Scouts
  
• 1963 - Girl Scouts divided into 4 age group - Brownie, Junior, Cadette, and Senior
  
• 1975 - 123 million boxes of cookies sold
  
• 1979 - Juliette Gordon Low inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame in New York
  
• 1983 - Juliette Gordon Low Federal Building opens in Savannah.
  
• 1987 - 75th anniversary of Girl Scouts
