Jasper Monument

William Jasper was a Sergeant who was killed in the British Siege of Savannah on October 9, 1779. Just more than 100 years later in 1883, a fifteen foot high statue of Jasper was erected in Madison Square.

Jasper displayed much courage and heroism during the American Revolution. He was a German immigrant who came to the New World by way of Pennsylvania and later settled near Charleston.

He heroicaly rescued the regimental flag of the Continental Army, but was mortally wounded in the process.
