Oktoberfest 2013 on River Street

You don’t have to be German to enjoy Savannah’s Oktoberfest celebration! This beer sloshing, brat eating, polka dancing festival is a sure fire good time for all. The first weekend of October, locals and tourists from all over come out in their best lederhosen and get ready to live it up, German style!

The event is held on historic River Street overlooking the beautiful Savannah River, and the long cobblestone road is blocked off from all traffic just for the festivities. Nearing their 30th annual celebration, there’s something for everyone. The heat of the summer has finally skulked away leaving cool breezes and golden southern trees to frame the charming streets. But if the perfect fall weather isn’t enough of a reason to come on down, perhaps the promise of ice cold beer of every kind will sway you. Of course, you can’t have a celebration of German heritage without beer, and Savannah’s selection is sure to please. But even if you’re not into craft beer, there are crafts of a different kind at the annual arts and crafts competition. Local artists of all talents set their work up and down the river underneath prisitine white tents. Jewelry, photography, paintings, clothing, soaps, all 100% guaranteed hand crafted, artisan products.

The German cuisine is also out in full abundance: bratwursts, sausages, sauerkraut, giant pretzels, and more. Vendors of all kinds are out in force, and you’re guaranteed to find the perfect pair to your drink. And if you find that you’re really good at this part of the festival, consider entering the sausage-eating contest! Later, you can dance off some of those calories to the various live music performances, including authentic Oompah and polka bands. The regional sounds of tubas, accordions, and trombones will surely make it difficult for you to remain in your seat, so get down and let the German spirits run right through you! There will also be chances of clogging, chicken dancing, and more oddities that are being added on to the schedule as the years go on. However, the most popular event of the weekend that’s here to stay is undoubtedly, the wiener dog race! Each little dog starts out in their own starting gate, but once the doors raise, they’re off! Though there are several rounds, and every dog runs as fast as their tiny legs can take them, only one will be declared the champion of Savannah Oktoberfest! This is a great family event that’s as cuddly as it is fun to watch, so bring the kids and cheer the fuzzy friends on! The event also happens in conjunction with the city’s monthly first Friday fireworks, so around 9:20 as the sky finally turns a dark black, pick a spot in the grass with your last (or not) beer to watch! Mark your calendars for the first weekend of October and come out to say guten tag to the beautiful happenings on the Savannah River. We guarantee you a wunderbar time.
