Sunken Ship Off Savannah Coast May Contain Treasures

The SS Republic, a steamship that sank 100 miles off the Savannah Coast at the end of the Civic War was recently discovered.

The Repulic sank in 1865 with a reported cargo that could be worth more than 100 million dollars.

Experts say if the cargo of gold coins can be recovered, it could become one of the most successful discoveries ever of so-called "sunken treasure."

59 passengers and crew were on board October 18, 1865 when the ship sunk during a hurricane. More than half of the people on board were rescued and survived
