Today Savannah's downtown district is a National Historic Landmark and is considered one of America's Most Beautiful Cities. Oglethorpe landed on Yamacraw Bluff after exploring the Savannah River in 1733 and started a settlement that became the city of Savannah. Oglethorpe named the area given to him by King George to form a settlement Georgia, in honor of the king. He was a meticulous planner who envisioned a city built around squares. Today, 21 of Oglethorpe's 24 original squares remain, many of them with monuments honoring Savannah's rich history.
