New Cancer Institute Opens in Savannah

The Curtis and Elizabeth Anderson Cancer Institute at Memorial Health University Medical Center is officially open for patients in need of world-class cancer treatment.

Under construction since early 2001, the $5.6 million Cancer Institute consists of 23,000 square feet of new construction and the renovation of an existing 4,500 square feet. The new facility houses radiation oncology and medical physics, medical oncology, surgical oncology, oncology research, tumor registry, oncology multi-specialty clinics, and oncology education outreach and support services.

"This building will create a first-tier medical facility that will set a new standard for cancer care in Georgia," said Robert A. Colvin, Memorial Health president and CEO. "The cornerstones for the project are convenience for patients, doctors, and staff; continued clinical excellence; enhanced services; and community development."

ACI has the only established pediatric, gynecologic, and hospital-based radiation oncology programs in the region. In addition, ACI was the first in this area to offer some of the most advanced technologies such as the new MammoSite high-dose radiation therapy for women with early-stage breast cancer, and dynamic IMRT, the most advanced form of radiation therapy that is commercially available. ACI also has three state-designated distinguished cancer clinicians and scientists – the only such physicians in Savannah.
